Mr. Gomez and his family live in Homestead, Florida, where they rode out Hurricanes Andrew (1992) and Wilma (2005). Both times, the family lost all the shingles from their home, but the roof system itself was virtually undamaged.
Mr. Gomez built his home in 1983, and two years later decided to install 1" foam adhesive to the underside of his roof to better insulate and strengthen his home. He claims that he didn't fully realize what a wise investment he'd made-how strong and water resistant foam adhesive truly is - until Hurricane Andrew blew through his neighborhood in 1992.
The eye of Hurricane Andrew passed directly over the Homestead area. The Gomez home became a safe haven for some 70 family members, friends and neighbors. The storm battered the house. By Gomez's account it took eight men and women to keep the garage door from collapsing. Despite losing his shingles, the only damage to the roof system was from the loss of an exhaust fan, which caused a minor leak in the kitchen area.
An elderly couple living in the same neighborhood wanted to ride the storm out in their own home. After the storm passed, the Gomez family went to check on them. They were found alive, huddled in a bathtub with their house completely destroyed around them. There was nothing left save the pile of debris. They did not rebuild and moved away from the area.
